Yes, in most vehicles parking sensors can be retrofitted without any problems. A retrofitted parking assistance system (PDC – Park Distance Control) is one of the most common comfort upgrades and can be installed in almost any car. At Audi, the parking assistance system is often also referred to as APS (Audi Parking System) or APS Plus. In Volkswagen vehicles, the term OPS (Optical Parking System) is commonly used, especially when the distance to obstacles is additionally shown graphically on the vehicle display.
During a parking sensor retrofit, ultrasonic sensors are integrated into the bumper. These sensors measure the distance to obstacles and warn the driver through acoustic signals or via a display in the vehicle screen.
In general, there are several ways to retrofit a parking assistance system:
- Rear PDC – classic system with four sensors in the rear bumper
- Front and rear parking sensors – complete system with up to eight sensors
- Systems with a display or visual indicator in the vehicle
Many modern parking assistance retrofit kits are universally compatible and suitable for numerous vehicles from Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda, and many other manufacturers.
Installation usually takes place directly in the bumper. The sensors are precisely positioned and connected to a control unit. As soon as reverse gear is engaged, the system activates automatically and warns the driver about obstacles.

A retrofitted parking assistance system not only increases comfort while parking but also reduces the risk of minor parking damage when maneuvering. Especially in tight parking spaces or in the city, a PDC retrofit can make everyday driving significantly easier.
